Background: I just got married last week and my wife and I are planning to go on our honeymoon in April (looking forward to it)! We live in Los Angeles, and we only will have a week to travel, so travel time is also a concern.

Question: I’m trying to figure out what current “deals” are out there given the current state of world economy. For example, Mexico would be a good deal now due to the drug wars (but that’s too risky for us…). Are there other places with such “deals”? Perhaps places with good US Dollar to XXX Currency exchange rate?

You can’t go wrong with Vegas. You can get really good deals on trips there and there are a ton of things to do. I like the helicopter rides you can take there; those are really fun.

Besides offering a more intimate cruise experience than the floating mega resorts of mass market cruise lines, luxury vessels have other advantages such as being able to call at ports where the major vessels cannot go, a higher staff to guest ratio and a wider range of itineraries across the globe.

Below are some of the luxury ships that have been recently launched or are expected to enter service in due course.

Silversea Cruises launched its largest ship yet, the 540-passenger Silver Spirit (its other ships hold fewer than 400 guests).

Most of the vessel staterooms have verandas, and the ship offers six dining venues as well as a state of the art spa.
This addition comes after Silversea had already bolstered its fleet in 2008 with the addition of the Prince Albert II, a small luxury expedition ship that visits the farthest corners of the world

The Yachts of Seabourn, is also upsizing.

In the summer of 2009, it introduced the 450-passenger, Seabourn Odyssey, due to be followed in June 2010 by a sister ship, the Seabourn Sojourn. Sea Cloud Cruises claims that the new Sea Cloud Hussar, due to launch in 2011 is “the largest full-rigged, three-mast passenger ship ever built,” yet the ultra luxurious vessel carries just 138 passengers in 69 cabins, all of them facing the sea.

Two other popular luxury line Crystal Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises have no new ships scheduled to be released, but have made some important improvements. To be squeezed into a Charter flight from Europe to the Maldives is just not my thing to do.

Good question, but remember that resorts have contracts with travel agencies, and of course the rates are lower then the rates offered to you. In addition to that, Maldives resorts pass on special offers to travel agents while charging you the full price. By the way, sometimes when you book directly with the resort, the bed taxes and service charges are not included.

The transfers to your island are always combined. Normally a maximum 12 People for speedboat and maximum 14 People for seaplane apply. I do not recommend to book private transfers because it’s rather expensive and not environmentally friendly. Give your Maldives agent your arrival and departing details and he will organize the best way to transfer you to the island resort fastest possible.
